Convenor Needed!

Become a Convenor – Help Us Make Our Summer Baseball Season a Success!

The role of a Convenor is vital to the smooth operation of our summer baseball season, and we’re looking for enthusiastic individuals to step into this rewarding position! While the list of responsibilities may seem extensive, we want to assure you that the Convenor will have full support from the Winakwa board, the management team, and Southdale’s Convenor, who will be there to assist when needed.

At its core, the Convenor’s job is to ensure that our baseball teams run smoothly, providing a positive experience that aligns with the goals and values of Winnipeg Minor Baseball.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Team Assignment: At the start of the season, the Convenor is responsible for ensuring all players are appropriately placed on teams.
  • Coach Support: Once teams are formed, the Convenor provides coaches with all necessary tools and resources to help them succeed.
  • Ongoing Assistance: Throughout the season, the Convenor acts as a key support resource for teams, assisting with any challenges or concerns that arise.

While the role is important, the rewards are just as significant! You'll be making a direct impact on the success and enjoyment of our baseball players and coaches. The Convenor role ensures that everything runs smoothly, contributing to a well-organized and positive experience for all involved.

If you’re interested in becoming a Convenor or simply want to learn more, please reach out to us. We are excited to work together to make this baseball season enjoyable and successful for everyone involved.

Join us in making a difference and creating lasting memories for our community!

Rally Cap - U7

Rally Cap

The Rally Cap Program is baseballs initiation program and is designed to enhance players' and coaches' first experience with the game for players 4-7 years old. Teams are typically made up of 6-8 players.

Winakwa will be offering Rally Cap baseball on Monday and Wednesday evenings. If your child would like to play baseball but is unable to play on Monday and Wednesday evenings, we will place them on a neighboring community club team who is playing on Tuesday and Thursday nights. In your registration, simply add in the “Notes” section that your player would like to play on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If we have enough players register to make two teams, we will happily also have a Winakwa team play on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

All Rally Cap players will participate in the Bonivital Jamboree (date & location TBA). This is a fun filled day of activities, baseball games, food and celebration.

Games are 60 minutes in length, and 3 teams participate together during this 60 minutes.

  • The time is broken into 3-20 minutes sessions.  During one session, two teams will play a game while the third team has a practice.  The teams then rotate.
  • In one hour, the teams will each play 2-20 minute games and have 20 minutes of practice time.
  • The games themselves are generally one inning long.
    • One team will be at bat, and all of the players have the chance to hit during their team's at-bat.
    • A coach will pitch to the batter (generally from one knee, and overhand).  If after 5 pitches the batter has not put the ball into play, a hitting tee is used for the       player to hit.
    • The batter and baserunners advance one base at a time.
    • The other team is in the field playing defence.  Fielders are encouraged to field, throw, and attempt to make a "baseball play" to their best of their abilities.  Fielders will rotate positions every few batters.
    • After everyone on the hitting team has had an at-bat, the hitting and fielding teams switch for the other team to have their at-bat.

Grand Slam - U9

Grand Slam

Grand Slam teams are made up of 7-8 players. Game length is established by time, not by innings, with 60 minutes set as the guideline. The premise of the game is the same, however, the rules are somewhat modified in the Grand Slam format.

  • One team is at-bat, one team takes the field.
  • A pitching machine is used and run by the coach/parent volunteer. If the batter "strikes out" with the machine, the coach then pitches to the batter until they put the ball into play.
  • The defensive team fields according to the standard rules of baseball. If the batter (or baserunner) is "out", they return to the bench as per usual.
  • The "3 outs" rule is not enforced - all members of the team hit during their team's at-bat.
  • Once all players have hit, the teams switch and play the other half of the inning.

Experience has shown that in one hour, the teams will play anywhere from a 3-5 inning game.

The Grand Slam program provides a great framework for all players to be experience baseball, improve their skills, and learn the nuances of the game. Most importantly, they are active and engaged.

Winakwa will be offering Grand Slam baseball on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. If your child would like to play baseball but is unable to play on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, we will place them on a neighboring community club team who is playing on Monday and Wednesday nights. In your registration, simply add in the “Notes” section that your player would like to play on Monday and Wednesday nights. If we have enough players register to make two teams, we will happily also have a Winakwa team play on Mondays and Wednesdays.

All Grand Slam teams will participate in the Bonivital Jamboree (date & location TBA). This is a fun filled day of activities, baseball games, food and celebration.

U11 - U18

U11

Games will be played on Monday and Wednesday with some games also played on the weekends (normally on Sundays). As we often have a large number of U11 A players in the Bonivital catchment, we host our own league of BoniVital teams so all games are within the Bonivital neighborhood.

11U teams will participate in a fun Jamboree (date & location TBA). The teams will play baseball games and attend skills sessions offered by Baseball Manitoba.

For schedules, times, and locations please see: Baseball Manitoba

U13

Games are played on Tuesday and Thursday nights. As we usually have a large number of U13 A players in the Bonivital catchment, we host our own league of BoniVital teams so all games are within the Bonivital neighborhood.

U15

15U (players born in 2008, 2009). Game nights will vary but typically will be Monday and Wednesday evening with occasional weekend games. BoniVital often joins with the Red River Valley Baseball Association to form a league so the players have ample opportunity for competition.

For schedules, times, and locations please see: Baseball Manitoba

U18

18 U A ball has games on varying nights. Bonivital players are grouped together onto teams based on the number of players who register. Home games are played at Whittier Park       baseball diamond.

Coaches and Parent Volunteers

Get Involved!

Coaches are the cornerstone of the sport experience for young players and thus essential for the success of youth sport programs in our community. If you are interested in volunteering as a coach, please let us know when registering online. Ideally, we like to have three coaches willing to volunteer from each team. It makes the practices and games much more active and “many hands definitely make light work”.
