Baseball Program

Introductions and Changes for 2023

Winakwa is excited to welcome baseball back! During this first year we will have Alana for Greendell and Brie from Southdale co-convening. We would love to have a couple volunteers from our Winakwa families to assist them this year. If you are interested, please reach out to Alana and Brie.

Winakwa Community Centre is part of the Bonivital Baseball Association. Together, we provide each player the opportunity to play baseball in a supportive and rewarding environment that emphasizes fun, and skill development at a level that fits the player's interest and ability.  In order to play baseball all players will require their own batting helmet and glove. Having their own bat tends to be a preference for U11 and older as is wearing non-metal baseball cleats.

The baseball season starts early May and the regular season wraps up near the end of June. For players 11U and older, play-offs will occur after the regular season finishes. Tryouts for AAA and AA teams will occur April 2-6, 2023 and as soon as those teams are formed, the Community Club teams A teams will be created. Please see below for for age groups, registration fee and nights of play.

Rally Cap - U7

Rally Cap - Players born in 2016, 2017 & 2018

The Rally Cap Program is baseballs initiation program and is designed to enhance players' and coaches' first experience with the game for players 4-7 years old. Teams are typically made up of 6-8 players.

Winakwa will be offering Rally Cap baseball on Monday and Wednesday evenings. If your child would like to play baseball but is unable to play on Monday and Wednesday evenings, we will place them on a neighboring community club team who is playing on Tuesday and Thursday nights. In your registration, simply add in the “Notes” section that your player would like to play on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If we have enough players register to make two teams, we will happily also have a Winakwa team play on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

All Rally Cap players will participate in the Bonivital Jamboree on Saturday June 17, 2023 at Southdale Community Center. This is a fun filled day of activities, baseball games, food and celebration.

Games are 60 minutes in length, and 3 teams participate together during this 60 minutes.

  • The time is broken into 3-20 minutes sessions.  During one session, two teams will play a game while the third team has a practice.  The teams then rotate.
  • In one hour, the teams will each play 2-20 minute games and have 20 minutes of practice time.
  • The games themselves are generally one inning long.
    • One team will be at bat, and all of the players have the chance to hit during their team's at-bat.
    • A coach will pitch to the batter (generally from one knee, and overhand).  If after 5 pitches the batter has not put the ball into play, a hitting tee is used for the       player to hit.
    • The batter and baserunners advance one base at a time.
    • The other team is in the field playing defence.  Fielders are encouraged to field, throw, and attempt to make a "baseball play" to their best of their abilities.  Fielders will rotate positions every few batters.
    • After everyone on the hitting team has had an at-bat, the hitting and fielding teams switch for the other team to have their at-bat.

For more information on the Rally Cap program please visit the Baseball Manitoba website at http://www.baseballmanitoba.ca/rally-cap.

Grand Slam - U9

Grand Slam - Players born in 2014 & 2015

Grand Slam teams are made up of 7-8 players. Game length is established by time, not by innings, with 60 minutes set as the guideline. The premise of the game is the same, however, the rules are somewhat modified in the Grand Slam format.

  • One team is at-bat, one team takes the field.
  • A pitching machine is used and run by the coach/parent volunteer. If the batter "strikes out" with the machine, the coach then pitches to the batter until they put the ball into play.
  • The defensive team fields according to the standard rules of baseball. If the batter (or baserunner) is "out", they return to the bench as per usual.
  • The "3 outs" rule is not enforced - all members of the team hit during their team's at-bat.
  • Once all players have hit, the teams switch and play the other half of the inning.

Experience has shown that in one hour, the teams will play anywhere from a 3-5 inning game.

The Grand Slam program provides a great framework for all players to be experience baseball, improve their skills, and learn the nuances of the game. Most importantly, they are active and engaged.

Winakwa will be offering Grand Slam baseball on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. If your child would like to play baseball but is unable to play on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, we will place them on a neighboring community club team who is playing on Monday and Wednesday nights. In your registration, simply add in the “Notes” section that your player would like to play on Monday and Wednesday nights. If we have enough players register to make two teams, we will happily also have a Winakwa team play on Mondays and Wednesdays.

All Grand Slam teams will participate in the Bonivital Jamboree on Saturday June 17, 2023 at Southdale Community Center. This is a fun filled day of activities, baseball games, food and celebration.

Coaches and Parent Volunteers

get involved!

Coaches are the cornerstone of the sport experience for young players and thus essential for the success of youth sport programs in our community. If you are interested in volunteering as a coach in 2023, please let us know when registering online. Ideally, we like to have three coaches willing to volunteer from each team. It makes the practices and games much more active and “many hands definitely make light work”.
